Re: West Ham Memories - Lucas Neill
From Carragher's autobiography:-

When my leg was broken in an horrific tackle by Lucas Neill in September 2003, my mates were ready to hunt him down if I gave the go-ahead.

A few weeks later I received a phone call. “You won’t believe this, Jay. We’re in the Trafford Centre and Lucas Neill is walking straight towards us. What do you reckon?”

Did I really want Neill to take a crack? “There’s only one problem,” added the voice. “Little Davey Thommo is with him.”

That was that. I could hardly let one of my best mates, David Thompson, now a Blackburn player, become a witness to an assault. Besides he’d have recognised the attackers. The impromptu mission was aborted and I sent a text to Thommo telling him Neill should give him a hug of thanks.

As word got back to Blackburn about the near miss, or should that be hit, their coach Terry Darracott, a Scouser, appealed to one of my friends to call the boys off. I agreed.

Just taken a look myself, disgraceful challenge, tempered by the fact it was on Carragher.

as Steve said below, great captain, if not the best footballer... i remember the bald man city winger (Petrov?) ripping him to pieces at Upton Park
.

Compared to the chaos twins Dailly and Repka he was world class...

Just looked at Neill's leg break tackle on Carragher. It made me wince!

I liked him. Leader, player,. Not sure we let him go so easy?

Remember when Manchester Uniteds Nani "headbutted" him and they both went down in the most theatrical way possible.

Nani got sent off for it I think.

Re: West Ham Memories - Lucas Neill
Didn't Jamie Carragher make a tit of himself in his book over Neill? Something about almost getting Nicky Tanner and his mates to kneecap him over a broken leg or some such nonsense?

Re: West Ham Memories - Lucas Neill
Darby, I don't think so. I think every move was money motivated, which is fine as he was an employee (a bloody good one), not a supporter.

You may be right though about the Liverpool move though, but because it seemed he loved turning out for his country.

What is he doing now?
Didn’t his business interests go tits up?

Think he left in an argument over money that the club refused to pay. And Zola was too piss poor to insist he was retained

Seemed like a top bloke to me.

Decent footballer too.

Re: West Ham Memories - Lucas Neill
The mercenary thing is wrong. He joined us instead of Liverpool because he needed to start games to stay in the Aussie squad.

Last proper decent captain we had. Survived a 'hit' at the request of Mafia don Jamie Carragher. Top man

Re: West Ham Memories - Lucas Neill
I used to go and get autographs from the players when I was a kid at the players car park at UP.
I remember we had a bit of a shit result and it looked like the writing was on the wall and relegation was bound to happen.
Some players were coming out signed autographs usual stuff really but you could sense that they didn't quite believe we could stay up.
There was some kid probably no older than about 10 asked Lucas for his autograph.. he then said to him.. lucas will you stay when we go down. Neill to his absolute credit signed the shirt and then made a massive announcement.
'Everyone listen up.. as long as I am captain of this football club.. we will not be relegated.. we will stay up'
Probably about 500-600 people heard it and true to his word we stayed up. I'll always remember him for that. Good captain.. good leader.. not the best footballer but still a man we needed when we looked doomed

Quality player AND captain, especially when compared to that twat Upson who followed.

Re: West Ham Memories - Lucas Neill
That side of the world produced some decent players back then and they worked their socks off as well. Remember Tim Cahill being a real handful and Lazaridis did a decent job for us. Cracking goal against Brum.

Eerie Descent 2:50 Mon Mar 11
Re: West Ham Memories - Lucas Neill
The only thing stopping him being an absolutely top drawer player was his lack of pace.

Yeah done well at a grim time for us( when isn't). Seem to remember he could be a bit of a clumsy fouler though.
